NATURAL ANTI INFLAMMATORY FOODS AND HERBS

This article is a guide to foods and herbs with natural anti inflammatory properties. It’s a good partner to an article I wrote a week or two back, Food and Herbs With Antibiotic Properties.

As I said there, modern medicine is awesome, and there is no substitute for it. These articles are meant to be a supplement, not a replacement.

Let’s first take a look at inflammation, and why it is bad for you.

THE DANGERS OF INFLAMMATION

Inflammation is one of the body’s natural healing responses. In our modern world, however, it has become an issue where certain environmental factors have caused a long-term, low-level, whole-body inflammation in some people. This is dangerous.

Chronic Inflammation can lead to a host of different health issues, including diseases that end in “itis” (arthritis, prostatitis, gastritis, etc), increased risk of heart and circulatory diseases, and increased risk of certain cancers.

Foods That Cause Inflammation

A list of some foods that are notorious for the inflammation they cause:

  • Alcohol
  • Artificial additives (aspartame, MSG, etc)
  • Dairy
  • Processed Meat
  • Reined Grain
  • Sugar
  • Trans Fats
  • Vegetable cooking oils

So with all that being said, let’s take a look at some of the foods and herbs that are known to reduce this bodily response.

FOODS WITH ANTI INFLAMMATORY PROPERTIES

BlueberriesBlueberries

A well-known super food, and one of my favorites on the list. These little blue wonders are packed full with antioxidant and inflammatory-protective goodness. And they’re yummy!

BroccoliBroccoli

Broccoli gets a bad rap, but is filled with anti-inflammatory and cancer-fighting agents. My tip is to eat them raw, and dip them in a bowl filled with olive oil and vinegar. If you like the taste of vinegar, you will get a flavor explosion.

Extra_Virgin_Olive_OilExtra Virgin Olive Oil

Olive oil is filled with polyphenols that will protect your heart and circulatory system (there’s a reason people in the Mediterranean are so healthy).  It can also reduces the symptoms of asthma and arthritis.

This brown algae that grows in the sea has a ton of health benefits. It contains fucoidan, a substance with anti-inflammatory properties. Kelp has also been shown to reduce cancer and general oxidation stress. And hey, it promotes weight loss, too!

PapayaPapaya

This great fruit will reduce inflammation and improve digestion. Tons of vitamin C and E.

Well known to reduce inflammation, along with the risks of cancer and heart disease.

Sweet Potatoes

Will offer a ton of vitamins and nutrients that together help to fight inflammation.

Wild SalmonWild Salmon

A great way to get your EPA and DHA, important Omega 3’s (most people don’t get enough of these!). They will reduce inflammation, heart disease and cancer (as we’re seeing, reducing inflammation helps in a ton of other ways). Also been proven to reduce depression.
